Atari era una nueva empresa en Sunnyvale que fabricaba videojuegos. Jobs fue reclutado por Atari, simplemente porque se presentó un día por allí. Al Alcorn el cofundador de Atari diría, "El director de personal me viene a ver y me dice, que tenía un hippie que parecía haber venido de las montañas, el tipo me pregunta…–¿Llamo a la policía?–". Alcorn quedó intrigado y optó por reclutarlo.

El iPod es un reproductor de música digital con disco duro o memoria flash, creado por Apple Computer. Puede reproducir archivos MP3, WAV, AAC/M4A, AIFF y Apple Lossless. La capacidad del disco duro es de hasta 60 GB (hasta 15.000 canciones, 25.000 fotos, 150 horas de vídeo y soporte para Podcasting en el Modelo 5G).

Hasta ahora se han desarrollado cinco versiones del iPod original, la edición especial U2 (que es negro, incluye grabado láser de los integrantes del grupo, merchandising oficial y pantalla a color), el iPod mini de 4 GB y 6 GB, el iPod nano (blanco y negro, pantalla a color, memoria flash de 2 GB y 4 GB) y el iPod shuffle (blanco, sin pantalla, memoria flash de 512 MB o 1 GB).
